How Steppa payouts actually work.

The internet is full of people who remember fees eating the pot. Some of that is still true of older challenges. Some of it is a different settlement model. Here is the arithmetic, in dollars, plus a calculator. Nothing on this page is a guarantee. Finish rates move.

I host challenges on Steppa and am paid a 5% creator fee: the rate I set in the create flow, charged on top of each entry, whether or not you finish. Processing-fee dollars stay “shown in app.” If this page and the app disagree, the app is right. Source: Steppa terms (5 August 2026). Disclosure.

The one formula that matters

Under the current up-front model, the prize pool is the sum of everyone’s stakes. Finishers split that pool. Substitute the definitions and the headcount disappears:

Your payout = your stake ÷ completion rate.

A 67% finish rate on a $70 stake is $105.00, or 1.50×. That is true in a 60-person card and on a house card at the same rate. On 16 August 2026 the live house listing on playsteppa.com was a $250 stake for 15 days, not a $70 week. Pool size is still a vanity metric. The only variable that determines your return is what fraction of people finish. We publish ours on /receipts.

Small pools have more variance around that expected number. The formula is the centre of the distribution, not a promise that you will land on it.

What house cards actually paid

Steppa does not publish a house completion archive. On 16 August 2026 we transcribed 16 settled house cards from the iOS app: 7,141 entries, 5,536 finishers, pooled finish rate 77.5%. Return if you finished ran from 1.07× (1 Day, 25k) to 1.69× (Locked In). Median finish was about 77%, which on a 100%-to-winners pool is about 1.30×. The 60–70% band this format is tuned to is a better deal for finishers than most of those house cards.

Two numbers, not one: if you finished is payout ÷ buy-in. Expected value before you know whether you finish is 85 cents per dollar on every card that took 15% from the pool, and about $1.00 on cards where the fee dropped to 0%. Win rate does not change that average. It only changes how the remaining share is split. Full table, methodology, and fee notes: house challenge results.

Where your money goes

Steppa’s terms define two settlement models and a hard cutover: the up-front-fee model is the default for challenges created on or after 18 June 2026. Legacy applies only to challenges created before that date; the model is fixed at creation. Every Weekly Split edition is therefore up-front. The legacy column below is history (the source of older “fees ate the pot” coverage), not a live maybe.

Steppa’s terms name the processors. Whop handles entry fees and international payouts. Mercury handles US ACH payouts (no fee to you). PayPal handles PayPal payouts (no Steppa fee; PayPal’s own FX or withdrawal fees can still apply). International payouts via Whop have method-specific fees deducted from the payout; Steppa does not subsidise them. US ACH and PayPal are free on Steppa’s side. An App Store summary that says Stripe does not match the terms. We follow the terms.

Payout calculator

Enter a pool, a headcount, and a finish rate. You get finishers, stake, dollars per finisher, and the multiple. This is an illustration. Real settlements live on the receipts page.

Defaults match a $70 Weekly Split at the 67% band we tune for.

Implied stake$70.00
Finishers (rounded)40
Payout each$105.00
Multiple1.50×

Not a quote. Does not include processing or host fees you pay on top. Finishers are rounded to a whole person. Per-winner payouts round down to the nearest cent; Steppa keeps the remainder, per their terms. A $1,000 pool split 7 ways is $142.85 each, not $142.86.

Worked examples at three finish rates

Same $70 stake, same 60 people, $4,200 pool. Only the finish rate changes.

Why an easy challenge is a worse deal

If 95% of people finish, the pool is sliced 57 ways and each winner takes home a few dollars over their stake. You did the walking. You took the risk of a sick day. You paid the processing fee and the host fee on top. The “win” is a rounding error.

That’s not a moral failure. It’s arithmetic. A 5,000-step week is kinder on Tuesday and worse on Monday when the receipt prints. We set 9,000 because we want finishers to have something to split, and because a challenge nobody can finish is worse in the other direction: Steppa’s terms say that if there are zero winners, no payout is made and the company retains the prize pool. Tuning for 60–70% is how we keep other people’s money in other people’s hands.

When the money arrives

After a challenge ends, winnings are credited to your in-app wallet within 24 hours (terms §Cash Balance). From the wallet you cash out via Mercury (US ACH), PayPal, or Whop (international). The cash-out minimum is $25, so a small win sits until your balance reaches it. Velocity limits, processors, and what promotional credit is not: how to cash out of Steppa.

What happens to a forfeited stake

Miss a day and you are out. There is no partial credit. Your stake stays in the pool for the people who finished. That is the product. If the miss was a sync failure, email support@playsteppa.com before the challenge ends if you can, and dispute within seven days of the end date. We will help you assemble Apple Health evidence. We cannot overturn their ruling. If they decline a verified technical failure, our goodwill policy may refund the host fee and gift a next entry, inside a published cap.
