Step challenge apps with real prize pools, compared.
Most “apps that pay you to walk” guides are a roster of gift-card and coin apps, often published by a company that ranks its own product first. This page is narrower. It is about stake-and-split: you put money in, other people put money in, finishers split a real pool. That is a different risk profile. It is not a walking tab that drips cents.
Two products people keep mixing up
Passive walking-reward apps (Sweatcoin, WeWard, CashWalk, and the rest) typically pay in fractions of a cent per step or in coupons. Honest figures in that layer are often something like $10–$50 a month if you are diligent, and sometimes less. The guides that rank those apps often concede this in a paragraph near the end.
Stake-based challenges are the other product. You can lose the buy-in in a week. You can also take home more than you staked if enough other people miss. That is not “getting paid to walk.” It is a contest with a forfeit. If that sentence is a problem, stop here and go for a walk for free.
The field
| App | What it is | Platforms | Typical money | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steppa | Short public or private step pots. Health-based. | iOS | Community cards often $25; house cards can be $250 (Ballers, Aug 2026). Fees on top under the up-front model | No Android. Sync failures forfeit. I host on it. |
| StepBet | Longer personalised games. Formerly WayBetter. | iOS + Android | Around $40; historically ~15% pot cut | Six-week cycle. Sold to Appex in 2025. |
| PaidToGo | Nearest iOS structural clone of the pot-split idea | iOS | Varies; read their current card | Smaller public footprint. Verify fees in-app. |
| HealthyWage / DietBet-class | Weight and habit pots, sometimes steps | Varies | Larger, longer, more paperwork | Not a weekly step ritual. Different sport. |
DietBet sits next to StepBet historically. It is a weight pot, not a step pot. I include the family because people searching this cluster bounce between them. I do not include Sweatcoin-class apps in the table. They are not prize pools.
How to compare them without lying to yourself
Ignore marketing multiples. Ask four questions:
- What happens to my money if I miss one day?
- Are fees on top of the stake or taken from the pot?
- Is the goal flat or personalised?
- Does anyone publish completion rates, including failures?
On (4): Steppa does not publish a house archive. We transcribed 16 settled house cards on 16 August 2026 (/house-challenge-results) and we will publish our own editions on /receipts. That archive is empty until Split No. 1 settles. A comparison page that invents five editions of hosted data to look mature is the thing this site is trying not to be. Come back after we have five real hosted rows; the table above will get first-party numbers attached to the Steppa line only, and I will say so.
Steppa, specifically
iOS, Apple Health, short challenges, public Discover cards, creator fees on public listings. Current marketing: 100% of the pool to finishers, fees shown before confirm. Older press and reviews describe fees eating the pot. That is the legacy model, and it may still describe some settled games. Full version: Steppa review and payouts.
StepBet, specifically
Better if you need Android, a no-lose / warm-up net, or a goal that matches a low baseline. Worse if you wanted a week, not six. Ownership changed. Details: Steppa vs StepBet.
PaidToGo and HealthyWage
PaidToGo is the closest “also an iOS pot” answer. I do not host on it and I do not have settlement receipts for it. Read their fee screen the same way I tell people to read Steppa’s. HealthyWage is a different duration and a different kind of bet: often weight, often longer, often more contract than ritual. Do not pick it because it appeared in a listicle next to Sweatcoin.
What I would do
If you want a weekly habit and you have an iPhone, a transparent host with a published finish rate is a better deal than a giant house card whose completion rate you cannot see. That is the product I am building. It is also a conflicted recommendation. If you want Android or a safety net, use StepBet. If you want coins for walking, this page is the wrong page. The guides that told you those coins are a living are the compromised layer I described at the top.
